{"id":587,"date":"2015-04-11T15:10:57","date_gmt":"2015-04-11T22:10:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/themercers.ca\/OrderOutOfChaos\/?p=587"},"modified":"2015-04-11T16:40:01","modified_gmt":"2015-04-11T23:40:01","slug":"thoughts-on-variation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/themercers.ca\/OrderOutOfChaos\/thoughts-on-variation\/","title":{"rendered":"Thoughts on Variation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Don\u2019t attribute (good or bad) to people that which should be attributed to the system.<\/p>\n<h3><b>What is variation?<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>a change or difference in condition, amount, or level, typically with certain limits<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Impact of Variation<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Variation results in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>adverse patient safety events<\/li>\n<li>reduced job satisfaction<\/li>\n<li>loss of productivity<\/li>\n<li>loss of revenue<\/li>\n<li>\u2026so we should try and reduce variation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Types of Variation<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>There are two types of variation and they require different approaches to remove them<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Common-cause <\/b><b>variation is characterised by:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Phenomena constantly active within the system;<\/li>\n<li>Variation predictable probabilistically;<\/li>\n<li>Irregular variation within an historical experience base; and<\/li>\n<li>Lack of significance in individual high or low values.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Special-cause variation is characterised by<\/b>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>New, unanticipated, emergent or previously neglected phenomena within the system;<\/li>\n<li>Variation inherently unpredictable, even probabilistically;<\/li>\n<li>Variation outside the historical experience base; and<\/li>\n<li>Evidence of some inherent change in the system or our knowledge of it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Determining Variation Types<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Hey Craig! Which is why all vehicles are equipped with a spare tire, jack etc.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Special Cause<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Operator falls asleep<\/li>\n<li>Machine malfunction<\/li>\n<li>Computer crashes<\/li>\n<li>Poor batch of raw material<\/li>\n<li>Power surges<\/li>\n<li>Broken part<\/li>\n<li>Abnormal traffic (click-fraud) on web ads<\/li>\n<li>Extremely long lab testing turnover time due to switching to new computer system<\/li>\n<li>Operator absent<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure style=\"width: 302px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/themercers.ca\/OrderOutOfChaos\/images\/Special-Cause-Tire.jpg\" alt=\"4 slashed tires is special cause variation\" width=\"302\" height=\"302\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Someone slashing all four of your tires is special cause variation. It\u2019s not anticipated and there is not much you can do about it.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Responding to Variation<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Response to common cause variation is incremental and requires data (measurement)<\/li>\n<li>Response to special cause tends to be knee-jerk and expensive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>So why do we care Craig?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/themercers.ca\/OrderOutOfChaos\/images\/La-Dee.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"230\" height=\"256\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We should care because more often than not the wrong type of variation is suspected and then the wrong response is applied (tampering), which is not only more expensive but it negatively impacts the staff working within the system.<\/p>\n<p>For example, what was the reaction to the 9\/11 attacks in the United States? They spent billions of dollars tampering with the system (a common cause response) that ultimately has not increased safety because it was not the source of the variation in the first place.
